4 Activities to Do in North Georgia This Summer
As the chill in the air gives way to sticky humidity throughout Georgia, the arrival of summer is unmistakable. Whether you’re a thrill seeker or leisure explorer, North Georgia opens up to a world of activities during the summer. From towering mountains to serene lakes to raging rivers, the region offers a myriad of experiences that cater to all interests. We’ve put together four must-see places to visit in North Georgia this summer.
Cool off at Lake Lanier
The summer heat can be brutal in the south, making Lake Lanier one of the most visited lakes in Georgia. With over 38,000 acres of water, Lake Lanier offers endless opportunities for water-based activities. Rentals are easily accessible, making this lake very active in the summer. For paddle board and kayak rentals at Longwood Park, check out Gnarly Marsh. Boats are seen tugging wake boarders and tubers throughout the hottest hours of the day. Camping and fishing are also popular year-round, with late winter and early spring being peak seasons. After a day on the water, visit one of the many highly rated lake-side restaurants with a variety of dining options to choose from. Pelican Pete’s is one of our team’s favorite spots right along the water with delicious food and drinks.
Float Down the Chattahoochee River in Helen
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains is Helen, GA. Find the perfect escape from a hot summer’s day with a leisure float down the Chattahoochee River. With multiple tubing options to choose from, a local favorite is Cool River Tubing. Officially open for the 2024 season as of May 24th, visitors can participate in the calming sensation that is floating down the river every day through the 2nd of September. Amidst the beautiful views of towering trees and charming German architecture, visitors can indulge in family-friendly fun throughout their stay in Helen.
Climb Yonah Mountain
For those seeking a more exhilarating adventure, hiking up Mount Yonah offers stunning panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment. This moderately challenging yet incredibly scenic hike is a favorite among both locals and visitors in North Georgia. After trekking over two miles, you’ll be rewarded with views of Cleveland, Georgia, and NoFo Brew Co Cleveland from the summit of Yonah Mountain. For a more extreme adventure, try scaling one of the rock faces equipped with pre-bolted belay points. Alternatively, you can use your climbing gear to set your own anchors for an added challenge. Yonah Mountain combines beauty with danger, making it one of the most rewarding hikes in North Georgia if approached correctly. Be sure to follow safety precautions and choose the adventure that suits you best.
Hike Amicalola Falls
Home to the tallest waterfall in Georgia, Amicalola Falls is nestled in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia. Many tourists and locals flock here for its blend of challenging and mild inclines. One path offers an ultimate adventure with a taxing climb up a 604-step staircase leading to the top of Amicalola Falls.
For a more relaxed venture, take a leisurely two-mile hike along the park’s well-maintained trails. At the top of Amicalola Falls, you can choose to descend via the stairs or the trail. Both options provide breathtaking views of the waterfall and lush woodlands.
Remember wherever you go and whatever adventures you seek, always pack in, pack out and leave no trace.
Whether you spent the day exploring or exerting yourself, sipping on a refreshing pint is the perfect way to end your day. As you head back down from Helen, GA or Yonah Mountain, visit NoFo Brew Co Cleveland and Cumming to tell us about your adventures. Perhaps a cold glass of Yonah Live Once Vienna Lager is exactly what’s needed after hiking the four miles round trip that is Yonah Mountain. We love a good adventure story and we can’t wait to hear how you #TapYourAdventurousSide.
